Lorence graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1963 and earned a business degree from Western Michigan University in 1967. Lorence is a small business owner and president of Wenke/Sunbelt Greenhouses. His flower production company became the 21st largest greenhouse in the country and employs over 300 people. Lorence was elected a Kalamazoo County Commissioner for 8 years and served 3 years as board chairman. In 2002 he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives and served for the constitutional limit of six years.

Lorence and his wife Nancy have been married for 52 years and have two children, Lisa Ambrosio (Wenke) and Rev. Jeff Wenke and six grandchildren. They live in Kalamazoo and enjoy traveling, boating, rotary, politics, church activities and family. Lorence and Nancy are very active in Libertarian Party and community service.
